what's the best method for maximizing the useful life of these batteries? I understand that there are particular charging patterns that are better than others - initial charging to full and then up to 80% thereafter (like the EV cars). Does any of these have an appreciable effect on battery life long term? If so, what's the best methods for charging?

My GOALZERO manual says keep unit plugged in to maintain charge. Is this going to shorten the battery life?

It will not as long as the battery is used once every 3 months. This will keep the battery healthy as it give it 'exercise.'
