Trying to keep it charged, topped off, with a 5 W solar panel. Doesn’t seem to be working.

Does the unit need to be on? Doesn’t seem to work either way. How do you know if it’s charging? Also, do I need to change polarity? I’m using the 8 mm connection.

5W is far too little. Try 50W to topping off, 100W or more to get a good solar charge.

The unit does not need to be on in order to charge. The charge controller will automatically detect the input power and start accepting a charge.
